Introduction |
Polyvinylpyrrolidone, abbreviated as PVP, is a polymer of vinylpyrrolidone. Due to its different degrees of polymerization, it is divided into soluble PVP and insoluble PVPP (polyvinylpyrrolidone). The relative molecular weight of soluble PVP is 8000-10000, which can be used as a precipitant to precipitate when it interacts with polyphenolic substances. Using this method, residual PVP is easily present in the wine. Due to the accumulation effect of PVP in the human body, the World Health Organization does not recommend its use. In recent years, the use of soluble PVP has become rare. Insoluble PVPP series began to be used in the beer industry in the early 1960s, with a relative mass greater than 700000. It is a high molecular weight insoluble substance formed by further crosslinking and polymerization of PVP, and can be used as an adsorbent for polyphenolic substances with good results. |
Function |
In the field of medicine and health: PVP has excellent physiological inertia, does not participate in human metabolism, has biocompatibility, and is non irritating to the skin, mucous membranes, eyes, etc. As an excipient for pharmaceutical preparations, it can be used as a binder for tablets and granules, a solubilizer for injections, a flow aid for capsules, as well as a lubricant and coating film-forming agent for eye drops. Food processing: PVP has food safety and can form complexes with specific polyphenolic compounds (such as tannins), serving as a clarifying agent and stabilizer for beer, juice, wine, and other products. Daily cosmetics: Due to its low toxicity and physiological inertia, PVP is used as a wetting agent, foam stabilizer, and setting agent in cosmetics to enhance the wetting and lubricating effects of products. Detergent: PVP has anti dirt and anti sedimentation properties and can be used as a detergent to enhance its cleansing ability and prevent irritation to the skin. |
Application |
Biochemical research: PVP is a white or light yellow powder with hygroscopicity and easy flowability. It is insoluble in water, alkali, acid, and commonly used organic solvents, but has strong swelling properties and the ability to complex with various substances. In biochemical research, PVP can form complexes with phenols and alkaloids, thereby removing them from plant samples, preventing protein modification and interference, and enabling more accurate determination of protein content. Pharmaceutical industry: PVP is mainly used as a disintegrant for tablets in the pharmaceutical industry, and can also be used as a disintegrant and filler for pills, granules, and hard capsules. It has good fluidity and plastic deformation, therefore it has excellent adhesion. In addition, PVP can form complexes with various medicines and other substances, improving the solubility and bioavailability of medicines, enhancing the taste of paracetamol, and exhibiting resistance to diarrhea, gastritis, ulcers, esophageal cancer, and other conditions. Beverage stabilizer: PVP is used as a stabilizer in beer, Baijiu, grape juice, fruit juice and other beverages to extend their storage period. This is achieved through the moisture absorption and expansion properties of PVP, which helps maintain the stability and taste of the beverage. Environmental protection technology: In the field of environmental protection technology, the application of PVP based on advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) has received widespread attention. This technology is favored for its strong oxidation ability and stability in handling various difficult to degrade pollutants. PVP plays an important role in the application of environmental protection technology, helping to address global climate change and water pollution issues. |
