Description |
Fresh shea butter is a yellow paste with a special odor, and usually requires refinement to obtain ingredients that can be used in cosmetics. Like most vegetable oils, the main component of shea butter is also triglycerides, with saturated fatty acids such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, and arachidonic acid, as well as unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid. In addition, shea butter also contains a significant amount of unsaponifiable substances, with vegetable oil generally containing less than 1% of unsaponifiable substances, while shea butter contains up to 7% to 10% of unsaponifiable substances. The main unsaponifiable substances are plant sterols and tocopherols (vitamin E). In addition, triterpenoids are also an important component in shea butter. A large amount of unsaturated fatty acids and unsaponifiable ingredients make shea butter have excellent skincare effects. |
Function |
The indicators of shea butter and human sebum secretion are closest. The non saponifiable ingredients such as phytosterols and vitamin E contained in shea butter can fully moisturize the skin and resist ultraviolet rays (UVB). In addition, these ingredients also have excellent repairing and anti-inflammatory functions. Shea butter has good skin penetration function, which can promote the rehydration of skin cells in the stratum corneum of the Chemicalbook skin. At the same time, it can form a protective film on the surface of the skin to prevent the evaporation of skin moisture, thus having a strong moisturizing effect on the skin. Shea butter itself is a natural moisturizer, and has the effect of removing dead skin and preventing skin aging. Therefore, Shea butter is also a good additive for whitening creams and nutritional anti-aging creams, The optimal addition amount is 2% -8% shea butter. |
Application |
Shea butter is mainly used in the cosmetics industry for skin and hair related products (lip gloss, moisturizers, emulsions, moisturizers for dry and fragile hair). It is also used in soap manufacturing. Some handmade soap manufacturers use 25% shea butter - about 28% of the maximum usage limit set by the European Union, but this is rarely seen in commercially produced soap due to its higher cost for palm or olive oil. It is a great moisturizer for people with dry and chemical skin conditions. Although there is no evidence to suggest it can be cured, it can alleviate pain and itching related to tightness. In some African countries such as Benin, shea butter is used for cooking, as a waterproof wax, for hair styling, candle manufacturing, and as an ingredient in medicinal ointments. It is also used by traditional African percussion instrument manufacturers to increase the durability of wood (such as carved shells), sand hammers, and leather adjustment straps. |
