Introduction

Dehydroacetic Acid is strong bacteriostatic capability , a broad wide for bacteriostasis and is not conditioned by pH values. In acidic, neutral and alkaline condition, its effect is well, especially for mold, yeast and bacteria, and the effective working concentration is low. And heat resistance and light resistance is good, besides,it will not be breaken down and evaporated with steam during food produced. The testing proved that it is almost nontoxic, safe. It doesn't produce abnormal off-flavor in use, so it can prevent rancidness, obviously extend its storage time.

Function

Dehydroacetic acid (DHS) is used as stabilizer for cosmetic and pharmaceutical products due to its fungicide and bactericide activity, as additive for PVC-stabilizers and for the syntheses of veterinary medicines.

Application

• as a fungicide and bactericide. The sodium salt, sodium dehydroacetate, is often used in place of dehydroacetic acid because of its greater solubility in water.
• as a food preservative to prevent pickle bloating in squash and strawberries. When used as a food additive, dehydroacetic acid is referred to using the International Numbering System for Food Additives or E number 265.
• as a plasticizer in synthetic resins.
• as an antienzyme in toothpastes.
• as a precursor for dimethyl-4-pyridones. The compounds are synthesized when dehydroacetic acid is exposed to aqueous solutions containing primary amines.
