Introduction |
Magnesium Stearate a chemical formula of C36H70MgO4 and a molecular weight of 591.24, is an organic compound. It is a white, non-sandy fine powder that feels greasy when in contact with the skin. Insoluble in water, ethanol or ether, it is mainly used as lubricant, anti-sticking agent and glidant. It is especially suitable for the granulation of oils and extracts, and the granules produced have good fluidity and compressibility. Used as a glidant in direct compression. |
Function |
Magnesium stearate can be used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride. Its stabilization performance is similar to that of calcium stearate. It can be used in food packaging materials with zinc soap or calcium soap, but it is not widely used. Magnesium stearate can also be used as a mold release agent for plastic products, a raw material for cosmetic fragrance powder, emollient ointment, a powder mold for medical tablets, and a translucent paint flattening agent. The laboratory produces magnesium stearate by metathesis reaction of sodium stearate and magnesium sulfate. It can also be refined from a mixture of food-grade solid organic acids (stearic acid, palmitic acid) and magnesium oxide. |
Application |
Magnesium stearate is mainly used as a lubricant, anti-sticking agent, and glidant. It is especially suitable for the granulation of oils and extracts, and the granules produced have good fluidity and compressibility. Used as a glidant in direct compression. It can also be used as a filter aid, clarifying agent and dripping agent, as well as a suspending agent and thickening agent for liquid preparations.
They are white, fine powder, insoluble in water. When mixed with hot, strong mineral acids, they decomposed into stearic acid and corresponding magnesium salts. They are widely used as lubricants, slipping agents, heat-stabilizers, mould releasing agents and accelerants in plastic, machinery engineering, rubbers, paints and inks industry etc.
Stearic acid is widely used in cosmetics as a thickening and curing agent, helping soaps take shape. Also acting as a surfactant, stearic acid has powerful cleansing powers that can help lower the surface tension of water, allowing it to mix with oils and dirt on the skin's surface, loosening them so they can be easily washed away with water.
Stearic acid also acts as an emulsifier, meaning it binds other substances (such as oil and water) that would normally separate and are incompatible, keeping the cleanser smooth and creamy.
