Introduction
1,4-Piperazinediethanesulfonic acid, abbreviated as PIPES, also known as 1-4-Piperazinediethylsulfonic acid in Chinese, is one of the sulfonic acid series buffer reagents developed by Good et al. in 1960's. It has some important characteristics shared by Good's buffer solutions, including: 1) low UV( λ≥ 260nm absorbance; 2) The water solubility is the strongest, while the solubility is the lowest among other solvents; 3) PChemicalbookKa is located in the neutral range and is not easily affected by temperature; 4) Stable pH value; 5) Low interference reaction, enzyme or chemical stability; 6) Easy to synthesize. The effective buffering range of PIPES is pH 6.1-7.5, with pKa=6.8 (25 ºC). Due to its pKa being close to physiological pH, it is suitable for cell culture. In addition, PIPES can also serve as a buffer reagent in animal and plant chemistry to minimize lipid damage and experimental artifacts caused by glutaraldehyde fixation.
Function

PH buffering: PIPES monosodium salt is a pH buffering agent that can be mixed with PIPES disodium salt. By changing the ratio and total amount of monosodium and disodium salts, the pH value and ionic strength of the medium can be adjusted.
Biological experiment: In cell experiments, the solubility of PIPES monosodium salt in water (H2O) is 100 mg/mL (308.31 mM; ultrasound assisted dissolution), which makes it suitable for preparing stock solutions.
Storage conditions: PIPES monosodium salt should be sealed and stored at 4 ° C, away from moisture. In solvent, it can be stored for 6 months at -80 ° C and 1 month at -20 ° C (sealed and kept away from moisture).
